Why are wasps around my house?

Wasps and hornets look for a quiet spot to build their nest and for sugary food: a small opening in the roof or shed, food and drinks left outside, fruit trees, an undisturbed corner of gutter or balcony. Even if you can't see the nest, the danger is real — a single mature nest holds several hundred wasps, and they get more aggressive as fall approaches.

Never attack a nest yourself. Group defence attacks send people to the ER every summer — and dozens of simultaneous stings can cause a severe reaction even in non-allergic people.

FAQ — Frequently asked questions

Will the nest just die off in the fall?

The colony dies at the first frost, true — but September and October are exactly when wasps are most aggressive. Tolerating a nest near a door, deck or window all summer is a risky bet, especially with kids.

Do wasps reuse the same nest next year?

No, a nest is never reused. But a location that pleased one queen (soffit, shed, cornice) is likely to attract another in spring — which is why we treat the spot preventively after removal.

Wasp, hornet or bee?

Bees (stocky, fuzzy) are protected and precious: for a compact swarm, contact a beekeeper — many collect swarms for free. Wasps (bright yellow, smooth, thin waist) and hornets are the dangerous ones near homes. Unsure? Send us a photo — identification is free.
