What is that black and red bug?

The boxelder bug is a black insect with red-orange lines, about 1 cm long. Not to be confused with bed bugs: boxelder bugs don't bite, don't transmit anything and don't reproduce indoors. Their only flaw — a big one — is the sheer numbers.

Our approach: keep them out

FAQ — Frequently asked questions

Are boxelder bugs dangerous?

No: they don't bite, carry no disease, cause no structural damage and don't breed indoors. The problem is the invasion itself — hundreds of insects on walls and windows — plus stains and odour when crushed.

When is the best time to treat?

Late summer and early fall, before they slip in to overwinter. Once inside the walls, they can't be flushed out: we then manage indoor emergence and plan the perimeter treatment for the next season.

Should I cut down my maple?

Rarely necessary. Perimeter treatment combined with sealing solves the problem in the vast majority of cases, even with a Manitoba maple on the property.
